Last Saturday, March 28, 2009, I went to SM Mall of Asia to join the Earth Hour 2009 Philippines, and showed my support to increase awareness about climate change. This is of course in addition to the numerous text messages (or SMS) I sent inviting fellow Filipinos to switch off their non-essential lights, or dim those lights, or change to a lower watts light.
I took photos of the event and some short videos which you will see inside…
SM Mall of Asia was the center of the Philippines participation, special guests were Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim; Pasay City Management head (I can’t remember her name); the Sy Family (owners of SM chain Malls); Department of Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes, and many others.
With performances from Mr. Energy Gary Valenciano (he performed Take Me Out of the Dark and Shout for Joy!) and Ms. Lea Salonga (Miss Saigon; singing voice of Princess Jasmine from Aladdin and Fa Mulan from Mulan and Mulan II, etc.)
There were also performances from groups but I did not pay much attention as I was roaming the grounds taking pictures. Overall, the event was great and having missed last year’s SM Mall of Asia Earth Hour event, this gave me a good feeling for having contributed in a small way together with like-minded people.
Additionally, I am happy to share that the Philippines registers record participation once again. Our Nation topped the Earth Hour global register for cities, towns, and districts with more than 650 communities taking part.
The event started with the darkening of the Rizal Shrine, a major Manila landmark honouring Filipino national hero Dr. José Rizal. The massive Mall of Asia in Pasay City, the world’s fourth largest mall, also went dark in a ceremony that drew several hundred people.
The ceremony was broadcast live to homes around the country by Studio 23, one of the largest television networks in the Philippines.
To summarize, let me borrow Neil Armstrong’s words when he landed on the Moon,
That’s one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind. Or for this event, “That’s one small action for Earth; one giant leap for our future.”
Now, here are the photos and videos of Earth Hour 2009.
