Pitch Perfect 2 is a sequel to the hit comedy and a capella film Pitch Perfect. The Barden Bellas, a three-time champion, are now seniors. Just like any other graduating kid, we go through that phase of worrying about the real world of tomorrow and trying to keep our fun-filled school days alive.
This led the ladies to one disaster performance to another. Their harmony and voice just gone. They were everywhere and nowhere. Would they be able to recover and save the reputation of the Barden Bellas, or will they be the generation that will taint the name of the group, for the first time in its history?
Well, you have to watch the movie to find out.
For this post, I’m going to talk about the Filipino talents in Pitch Perfect 2. The rising stars Filharmonic and the beautiful actress and model Hailee Steinfeld.
You’re probably aware of the all-male a capella group the Filharmonic. They rose to fame when they joined NBC’s The Sing-Off. They may not have won but they caught the attention of the world more than those that reached the finals. Pitch Perfect 2 is their latest performance where they’re known as Manila Envy.
As Manila Envy, they performed a Tagalized Journey song on stage. Though I admit, there were only a few scenes but it’s great to see these guys in the film.
On a side note, you’ll no doubt catch the words of the male commentator in the film that the Philippines was represented by a ladyboy group, he further said that he had an experience with the ladyboys in the Philippines. This actually killed the mood inside the cinema, so as a fair warning, it’s fiction.
In fairness, the female commentator did say the group’s name is “Manila Envy”, not “ladyboys”. Think about this, the male commentator was, excuse me, a douchebag in the film. He and his partner, are people who looks down on others, which was clearly established at the beginning of the film. That’s the whole idea behind the character.
So, before you react (and I cannot blame you this time), think that at the end of the day, it’s fiction.
With that out of the way, let’s move on…
Hailee Steinfeld is an actress and model in the United States of America. She was born on December 11, 1996 in Los Angeles, California. She’s Jewish on her father’s side, and an English, Filipino, and German on her mother’s side.
In the Philippines and the ASEAN region, we most likely first saw her in the 2010 film the True Grit as Mattie Ross; the 2013 Romeo and Juliet as Juliet Capulet; and in the 2013 film adaptation Ender’s Game as Petra Arkanian.
Hailee was also shortlisted in other projects, wherein some she was chosen. Why not? When she’s a multi-awarded young rising star that’s shining more brightly every day. Watch her as she takes on bigger roles and projects and become a household name.
Did you know she has an older brother, Griffin, who is a professional NASCAR driver? (I hear “ooohs” and “aaahhhs”.) She’s also planning to visit the Philippines “very soon”.
Pitch Perfect 3?
There you go, the Filharmonic and Hailee Steinfeld. Filipino-Americans who are not shy of their lineage. But how about Pitch Perfect? Are we going to see another sequel?
Hopefully. The film wasn’t clear about it but I definitely want it because Hailee is no doubt going to be the main star.
Confirmed Part 3!
Update 2015-06-16: Pitch Perfect 3 is confirmed! Target date: 2017-07-21.
