Rick Riordan Mythology

(Updated) Rick Riordan Mythology Timeline

A shared universe is always the best way to tell stories. It ties together different series even if they will never cross each other’s paths. It makes the reader’s imagination soar like an eagle wanting to see the bigger picture and understand how it all interconnects. How one story affects the other. How decisions of the characters makes an impact elsewhere.

But the challenge in this is keeping track of the events in each story. There will always be inconsistencies. It is unavoidable. Still, it needs to make sense, right? As a fan of Rick Riordan‘s Mythology, I went to work to create a timeline of events.

Here’s the result of that work.

When plotting timelines for works of fiction that you did not write, the first thing to find is an anchor. Usually, it is the canon publications, or the main series. In Rick Riordan’s Mythology, these are the novels. Any other publications like short stories must fit the novels and not the other way around.

This will solve inconsistencies if there are any (and there will be). This showed up in the Percy-Kane crossover shorts. If we use the Percy-Kane crossover as our anchor, the events in “The Serpent’s Shadow” no longer fits. It introduces more inconsistencies than it solves. But if we stick with the novels as our anchor, the inconsistencies are minor.

Hence the importance of finding an anchor and sticking to it. In this case, the novels is our anchor. If a non-novel contradicts the novel, we find ways around it, in-universe (or in-character) as much as possible. If there is no possible way to solve the inconsistency, we are left with two options: [1] it’s an in-universe mystery; or [2] author’s mistake. I do not like the last option “author’s mistake” because a fiction will always be a fiction, no matter how close it is to reality or not. In the first place, how are we to know if it was not a deliberate inconsistency?

I will not go into the methodology of how to properly pinpoint the dates. There are many considerations and factors involved, and I think it’s best to have it in another post (if I get a lot of request for an explanation).

In short, you can trust that the timeline below was based on an independent and extensive research.

Update 2015-10-29

With the release of The Sword of Summer, the first novel in the new series Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, a new anchor has been set, this very book. There were numerous clues that were left and these left no room to move the year of this novel forward or backward, not even a single year. The Sword of Summer was definitely set on January 2014.

Clues and all, it also affected all the previous novels, as such, they all have to be moved forward to match the clues dropped in The Sword of Summer. Fair enough, because it solved more inconsistencies and only left us with a new one (or two but they’re of the same type of inconsistency).

Here is the new timeline and years.

Read it completely first because I included explanations to the dates chosen.

    • Since this is the case, there is no other option but to assume the following:
      • 2014-01-06 Mon: Is Magnus Chase’s actual 16th birthday
      • 2014-01-15 Wed: Is the correct date for Ragnarok because it’s Full Moon on that day
      • Astronomical events are important in mythology, especially in this case
      • Knowing Greek/Roman half-bloods and Egypt avatars, it’s very possible Asgard half-bloods have quirkiness too. (In-universe explanation.)
    • Or, you can follow the novel…
      • 2014-01-22 Wed: Is Ragnarok day, this is the only year when January 22nd fell on Wednesday. The other years are too far in the past or future.
      • There were two Full Moons. The secular astronomical Full Moon on the 15th, and the Valhalla-mystical Full Moon on the 22nd. At least this way, we are still explaining it “in-universe”.
      • Or, the Full Moon date on the 22nd was a literary miscalculation. Meaning, when the author was looking at the calendar, he mistook the week of Full Moon as the week of 22nd. These two dates are exactly 1 week apart. (Pure out-of-universe explanation, which I don’t like.)
    • Full Moon and New Moon dates per year:
      • 2015-01-20 08:13 EST: New Moon
      • 2014-01-15 23:52 EST: Full Moon
