Kirsten Beyer’s latest Star Trek novel is out, Atonement, an epic conclusion to Voyager‘s “first chapter” in their return to the Delta quadrant under the Full Circle Project.

Admiral Kathryn Janeway faces a tribunal determined to execute her for supposed crimes committed during Voyager’s maiden trek through the Delta Quadrant. Captain Chakotay knows that the Kinara, several species now allied against the Full Circle fleet, are not all they appear to be. The Confederacy of the Worlds of the First Quadrant—a pact he cannot trust—is his only hope for unraveling the Kinara’s true agenda and rescuing Admiral Janeway.

Meanwhile, Seven and Tom Paris are forced to betray the trust of their superiors in a desperate bid to reveal the lengths to which a fellow officer has gone in the name of protecting the Federation from the legendary Caeliar.

Star Trek Relaunch: Atonement begins where Acts of Contrition ended, Admiral Kathryn Janeway’s pending tribunal and execution in the delta quadrant, and Tom Paris and Seven of Nine’s supposedly medical and scientific research mission back on Earth.

The story takes place in the year 2385 between the months of March and May, if like me, you want to see all the moving pieces in the Star Trek universe. In a way, it appears somewhat a travel back in time because the overall Star Trek Relaunch timeline is already in the early months of 2386, but since Voyager relaunch is taking place in the delta quadrant, this gave Beyer freedom to move the story slowly and concentrate on the characters.

This is what I like with this novel. The beliefs, morals, ethics, values, principles, of each individual characters, and the nation that they represent, were put to the test. A true return to Star Trek’s charm where it was not about the bigger picture but the struggles of the people as they faced the uncertain, even death of a loved one.

This story also put into light how individuals take their nationalism or patriotism to the extremes. The belief that the end justifies the means. How one easily throws to the window their ethics and morality for the nation. While others do everything within the bounds of that same morals to achieve the same end, as was shown in Tom Paris and Seven’s assignment back on Earth.

“Do I have another Jim Kirk on my hands here?”
“You are, in my estimation, a rare breed of Starfleet officer.”

~ Fleet Admiral Leonard James Akaar, Starfleet Commander-in-Chief, to Cadet/Ensign Icheb.
May 2382 in Star Trek Relaunch: Atonement

Of course, there was the first contact with the Confederacy of the Worlds of the First Quadrant that was introduced in the previous books. This time however, we learned how the Federation and the Confederacy are not exactly different from other. I would say that, these two nations represents the “first world” and “third world” labels that we know in our time.

Overall, it was an excellent novel. A true return to Star Trek’s mission. It’s one thing to produce a work for entertainment and its another to present our current issues and aspirations of the future. A 400-page book that was worth the wait and deserving of 5 out of 5 stars.
