Top 10 Live-Action Anime Adaptation (by Rustorwolf)
Rustorwolf, a YouTube Creator, compiled a list of live-action adaptation of popular anime movies. It is a very interesting list, here is the video and my comments.
The Top 10
- Blood: The Last Vampire (2009)
This was a great film and I would have placed this at the 4th or 3rd spot. Many who watched this were disappointed because it supposedly did not follow the “source” material which is Blood+. They were wrong. This live-action adaptation was based from the anime film of the same name, and it was very close to the source material.
- Black Butler (2014)
Familiar title but I haven’t seen this one, so no comment.
- Cutie Honey (2004)
Seriously?! This one should probably be in the 13th spot, really.
- Gantz 1 & 2 (2011)
Have not seen this and it does look to be a great movie with a great story. Now I have to find a copy.
- Lupin the 3rd (2014)
At the 6th position. It was a funny adaptation, as it should be because it is Lupin after all, but for me I would place this in the 8th rank.
- Another (2012)
Ahh, I was not aware there was a live-action of Another. To watch… do you agree it should be in the 5th position?
- Attack on Titan (2015)
Top 9 for this adaptation. It was all giants, explosions, and the usual “we are doomed” plot. I’m ignoring the “giants eating humans alive and having a feast” aside here.
- Parasyte 1 & 2 (2014)
Scary and a very different kind of gruesome. I do not know if it should be in the Top 3 position as I have not seen this. I’d probably watch the anime version instead.
- Death Note 1, 2, and spin-off (2006)
2nd position! In the above video, he listed it as “Death Note 1 -3”, it should be 1, 2, and spin-off. Death Note 3: Light Up the New World, was only released last year, 2016. Anyway, yes, these three films deserve this spot.
- Rurouni Kenshin 1, 2, and 3 (2012, 2014)
A spot well deserving of the Rurouni Kenshin film trilogy. Excellent musical performance, perfect fight scenes, and not too unrealistic as the anime adaptation of the manga.
This is my personal list. In the video above, these two were under the “Honorable Mention” category.
- Saikano (2006)
I strongly believe that Saikano deserves to be in the Top 1 spot, together with the Rurouni Kenshin trilogy. The source material of the film adaptation was based from the anime movie and the anime TV series of the same name. This film is a must even today, year 2017. Watch it and you will know why.
- Space Battleship Yamato (2010)
Yet another dramatic and excellent live-action adaptation, based from the very classic franchise of the same name. This one does deserve to be in the Honorable Mention as we simply can not rank such a masterpiece.
- Assassination Classroom (2015)
Great job in this adaptation but the anime is still a better choice.
- Battle Royale (2000)
Just the first film, Battle Royale II is not deserving of its title. However, I don’t think there is an anime adaptation of the Battle Royale manga.
